Geography: Located in East Germany, Berlin is the largest, most populous and the capital city of Germany. For its water supply Berlin depends upon River Spree, which flows through the centre of the city, River Havel, which flows from north to south and a chain of lakes formed by these rivers.

Economy: There always remained a difference between West and East Berlin. While West Berlin had a rapid economic growth after getting aid from USA and Allies after the World War II East Germany lagged behind economically. This economic disparity exists even today between East and West Berlin. The main revenue is earned from industrial sector like electronics, garments, textiles, metals, porcelain, china, bicycles, and machinery.

History: The city of Berlin was established between late 12th century and early 14th century. But the area where Berlin is located today was colonized by human race since the Stone Age. In 1470, after Elector Friedrich II moved to Berlin from Brandenburg and built a palace near Marx-Engels-Platz, Berlin became a more important place. After World War I Berlin, from an industrial giant went to a devastating state.Under the Nazi rule, Berlin went into the hands of the Communist Party in 1932.But large parts of the city remained under Hitler,which was heavily bombed during the Second World War. 1945, April 30, Hitler was with his mistress Eva Braun was escorted from his bunker. Later that afternoon he killed himself and Eva too.

Administration and Government: The parliament of the city Berlin is called Abgeordnetenhaus or House of Representatives. It has 141 seats. The Senate of Berlin a Governing Mayor and eight Senators forms the government of Berlin. the Governing Mayor of Berlin is also the Prime Minister of the federal state.

Transport System:
  • Airport: There are three Airports in Berlin serving different destinations: Tegel (TXL), serving Germany and West Europe, Schönefeld (SXF), serving Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa, and Tempelhof (THF), operating only to and from Kreuzberg.
  • Railway: The main railway stations of Berlin are Hauptbahnhof and Bahnhof Zoo Station, where most of the long distance as well as local trains halt.
  • Road: The main highway that links Berlin with other cities of Germany and the neighboring countries is A10 ring road. There are long distance buses, taxis and private cars available.

Society & Cultural Life: Berlin is a very safe place for all its tourists. The people of Berlin are very open minded and liberal. They have several bright and colorful festivals. The nightlife here is very vibrant with a lot many bars, pubs and night clubs. With opera, dance, theatre, cinema, pop and experimental culture like dance clubs, and live music venues you can catch a different show almost every day.
