The Lost City! This is how the ancient site of Machu Picchu is called. It is located on the Andes Mountain in the south west American country of Peru. It is situated in the Aguas town. The city of Machu Picchu is built in such a manner that it is completely invisible from the valley.
Peru is also known as the home to the Inca Empire which flourished in the 15th century AD. Machu Picchu means the ‘Old Mountain Peak’ and was believed to be the home to the general masses of the Incas. The Machu Picchu is situated at a height of 2,350 meters above sea level, 70 km to the northwest of Cusco and on the mountain Machu Picchu. The lost city was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham III in 1911.
The architectural wonder of the Machu Picchu is that the stone walls have been built without any mortar and still there is not an inch space between the stone blocks. The Machu Picchu has been built totally manually and is composed of 150 structures including the parks, sanctuaries, residences, temples, baths, and storage rooms and so on. There are two sectors in the Machu Picchu are the agricultural and the urban sector. The important function of this place was to serve as an astronomical observatory. The Machu Picchu is a totally self contained city.

It was built by the Sapa Inca Pachacuti for the local inhabitance. The whole place has 150 structures which include the palaces, store rooms, baths, temples and many other rooms for public use.
Some researchers are of the opinion that the city of Machu Picchu was a sacred city of the Incas specially used for the purpose of worshipping. On the other hand, recent research says that it was used for recreational purposes by the royal family of the Incas.
