Manaus had a very humble beginning in the year 1669 with a group of Indian settlements. It had reached the zenith of wealth and prosperity owing to the rubber plantations. Manaus has seen days of glory as well as tasted the dirt of poverty. But what has been impressive is the come back that was staged by the city. Manaus is the perfect place to de - stress yourself. Far away from the concrete jungle, the green forests of the amazons provide the perfect getaway for the soul.
Manaus is located on the banks of the Negro river. Once upon a time this Brazilian city was the cynosure of the rubber industry. This was affected when the seeds of the rubber began to get smuggled out of the city, leaving it without any major source of income. However, the city of Manaus has a great spirit to recover from that drawback and stand up on its feet once again with the help of exports like the rosewood oil, jute and other forest produce. The city has a rich history with wealthy rubber merchants living in its heart. The Amazonas Opera House was named amongst the Brazilian National Heritage. European settlements have also left their marks in the city. The Ponta Negra Beach which is at a distance of 13 km from the center of the city is very important from the tourist’s point of view. Manaus has been declared the “Zona – Franca” or the duty free zone which is a step towards making it a more favorable spot for commercial and tourist purposes. The most interesting part of the city is the jungle tours provided to the rainforests.
