History: the history of Manila can be divided into four parts: the Pre – Spanish Era, the Spanish Colonial Period, the American Colonial Period and the Liberation period. The origin of the city was as a Malay settlement. The Rajah by the name of Matinda gave a glorious period to the city in the end of 16th century. The Spanish colonial period started from 1565 and lasted till 1898. After that the American colonial rule started. The liberation period saw the freedom from the hands of Japanese occupation after the outbreak of the Second World War in the year 1941. This city is one of the most devastated cities during the war.

Geography: The Pasig River is said to be the builder of the Manila city. Many parts of the metropolis of manila were under the water. Through a period of hundreds of year’s parts of the seashore appeared as the land. The city of Manila is also taken to be a triangular piece of land, which emerged out of water. The river is considered to be the builder of the land in the region.

Economy: the main commerce of this city is the fresh produce markets and the shopping centers. Manila being a very important tourist destination, tourism is the obvious industry in the region. The economy of manila runs on tourists and therefore it is very important for the government to maintain the flow of foreign travelers.

Transport System: manila can be reached by air, road and rail. The transport system includes travel by air, road, rail and seaports. The city is full of bridges which is a very important part of the transportation system. The Philippines National Railways operates trains in the region. There is also the Manila Light Rail Transit System. The seaports of the city are the most important ones in the country. The Boulevard is the most famous street of Manila.



Administration and Government: manila is governed by the mayor who is also head of the executive department of the city.

Joselito L. Atienza, Jr.is the mayor of the city. The city has been divided into 897 barangays which are the units of administration in Manila. They are further divided into 100 districts which are governed by the mayor. They do not have any local self governance.

Social Conditions: manila has a cosmopolitan society which is a mixture of many kinds of religions. Hindus, Muslims, Christians live in harmony with each other. This is evident in the number of temples, mosques and churches present in the city. It is a modern society which has held on to its roots.

Educational Institution: there are a number of educational institutions primary, secondary and higher secondary. Other than that there are colleges and universities. There are 109 primary schools, 68 public schools and 41 private schools which aid in the educational enlightenment of the children. Here is a list of the educational institutions.

Cultural Life: the city of manila has a vibrant cultural life with a number of festivities, which have become a very important part of the lives of the inhabitants as well as the visitors. The Museums in the Cultural Center of Philippines are a treat for the lover of history. The months of December and January are the festive months of the city. Apart from that there are other recreational facilities like sports clubs and activities. The Chinese new year, the Fiesta de Sto. Nino, the Likhang Camayis some of the festivals.
