Geography: Miami is the largest city in the southern part of Florida and is situated in the Miami – Dade County. The city is located at an altitude around 5 ft from sea level on a broad plain. The surface bedrock of Miami is made up of Miami limestone. The latitudinal location of the city is 25 degrees N, 80 degrees W. Miami has a subtropical and humid climate with summer rains and dry winters. The maximum temperatures 24 degree centigrade and the minimum temperatures are 4 degree centigrade. The average annual rainfall is 58.6 inches.

History: The origin of the city dates back to the Native American inhabitance around 12, 000 years back. The Tequesta, to whom the Miami Circle is credited, inhabited the city when the Europeans entered. In the year 1800, the first European settlers came in from the Bahamas. Railways were introduced in the year 1896, in which, Julia Tuttle and William Brickell had a major role to play. Following this, Miami showed positive developments until the Hurricane and the Depression which struck a hole into the heart of the city. During the World War II, Miami was one of the few cities which remained relatively unharmed.

Economy: Miami has become a world city due to the commercial and cultural importance of the city. The proof to that is the presence of the foreign embassies of many important countries of the world. Miami features as the city having a very strong international business presence. Multinational corporations like American Airlines, Disney, FedEx, Microsoft, Oracle, and Sony have their Latin American headquarters located in the city. Tourism, stone quarrying and warehousing are the main industries. The city has a very high standard of living with most of the Family income going for ownership of house. Real estate industry is also growing a fast pace.

Administration and Government: Miami became a city in the year 1896 with only 300 voters. The Mayor of the Miami city is Manny Diaz who is assisted by 5 city Commissioners. Miami is the county – seat of the Miami – Dade County. The city has the largest municipality in the county.

Transport System: Miami International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States. Flights from all important cities of the world arrive and depart from this airport. The Port of Miami, known as the cruise capital of the world, entertains three million passengers annually. Cruise service is available from many Latin American, European and Asian cities. The expressways SR826 and SR836 can be taken to reach Miami by road from Tampa and Orlando. Public transportation includes a 21 mile metro rail service, the Metromover, the Metrobus and Tri – Rail services.

Society and Cultural Life: The grater Miami has been named the ‘cultural melting pot’. People having a variety of ethnicity and religious background live in this region. Latin Americans and Caribbean constitute the majority of the population. ‘Starting from the Grand Opera to performances by some of the biggest names in the music industry, to introducing the $255 million Performing Arts Center, Miami is a true patron of arts and culture. Educational Institutions: The Miami – Dade Public school is the largest school in the region with 414, 128 students. Other than that, Miami has many Jewish and Catholic schools. Higher education is facilitated by Barry University, Florida International University, Miami – Dade College, St. Thomas University and University of Miami. Education on specialized fields is also available in the city.
