Geography: Situated in the southern most part of Uruguay, Montevideo is the home to almost half of the population of the world. The city was formed on the banks of the river Rio de la Plata. It is located at 34.5° S, 56°W. Montevideo experiences warm summer with maximum temperatures of 28 degrees. Winters are mild with minimum temperatures are 6 degrees. On an average the city gets 36 inches of rainfall every year.

History: Following early settlements of the Portuguese and the Spanish, the city of Montevideo was finally founded in the year 1726 by the Governor of Buenos Aires, Bruno Mauricio de Zabala. It became the capital of the country in the year 1828. The city came under the British rule in the early 19th century. They built the rail links between the years 1860 and 1911. The effects of military dictatorship have been quite disastrous for the city. However, the move towards democracy has restored the city considerably.

Economy: Montevideo has been awarded the city having the highest quality of life, among all the cities in Latin America. The city had a humble beginning as a small settlement in the year 1860. Even though it received major setback from the period of economic stagnation, but the restoration started soon after the return to democratic set up. Agriculture is one of the major industries of the city. Tourism also plays an important part in collecting revenue for developmental processes.

Society and Cultural Life: The ethnic population of the city is made up of Italians and Europeans, who make up the majority of the population. Mestizos are also a part of the society, along with a small number of Africans.Catholicity forms the main religion. The Jews are the minorities. Non – religious population also exists.

Football is a very important sports activity in the country as well as the city. Montevideo was the host city for the FIFA World Cup held in the year 1930.

Transport System: Travel to Montevideo – you can catch a flight to the Buenos Aires international airport in Argentina. From there take a ferry to Montevideo. Bus service is also available form Brazilian and Argentinean cities to Montevideo. Terminal Tres Cruces, the bus terminal in Montevideo, provides the services.

Traveling in Montevideo – traveling in the city has been made very easy with the flurry of public buses on the road. Apart from that there is also the taxi. If you can spend more then you can go one step ahead and hire a car.

Administration and Government: Montevideo is governed by the Mayor who has been Ricardo Ehrlich, from the year 2005. The city is taken to be a primate city because of its size, which is two times larger than any other city in Uruguay. the city of Montevideo is a part of the Montevideo department.

Educational Institutions: The two important educational institutions of Montevideo are the Stella Maris College (Montevideo) and the British Schools of Montevideo. Other than that there are centers of higher education like the colleges and universities.
