Geography: Mumbai, the most populated city of India is located on the Salsette Island, in the west coast of India. The topographical position of the city is such that it falls in the seismically active zone. Mumbai experiences moderate climate with rainfall of 85 inches. The maximum temperatures in summer are over 30 degree centigrade and minimum temperatures in the winters are 11 degree centigrade.

History: The city has a history of multi – cultural rulers starting from the Emperor Ashoka, to the Mohammedans of Gujarat, to the Hindu rulers, to the Portuguese and finally in the hands of the British governors. After the World War II, Mumbai became a centre for all the nationalist activities which ultimately culminated to the Bombay Mutiny in the year 1946. After Indian independence from British rule in 1947, Bombay was divided onto the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat on the basis of language and culture. However, the Bombay city remained the capital of the new state Maharashtra.

Economy: Some of the important financial organizations of India are established in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. The foundation of the Stock Exchange in Mumbai was laid in the year 1875. Since then it has become the Mecca of India’s finance and business undertakings. The Reserve Bank of India, the mother of all financial undertakings in India, has its headquarters in this city since its establishment. 10% of India’s factory employment, 40% of income tax collections, 40% of foreign trade, and 20% of central excise collections come from Mumbai. The important industries are Textile, Financial Services, Engineering, Healthcare, Diamond, Information Technology, Shipping, Publishing, Films.

Administration and Government: The administration of the city is in the responsibility of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or the BMC.

The Municipal Commissioner of the city is vested with all the executive powers, who is Johny Joseph. The Mayor of the city of Mumbai is Datta Dalvi. The metropolitan area of Mumbai forms two districts of the state of Maharashtra.

Transport System:
  • Travel to Mumbai –Mumbai is connected to the rest of the world by the Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport. Mumbai can be reached by taking the long distance bus from cities of Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Aurangabad, Ahmedabad, Udaipur and Bangalore. The city is also connected by rail routes to all the major cities of India by the Central and the Western Railways.
  • Travel in Mumbai – Mumbai is known for its excellent public transportation system, specially, buses. The local trains in Mumbai are also a good option to travel around the city and its suburbs. You can also avail of the services of the Auto – Rickshaws and the taxis.

Society and Cultural Life: The people of Amchi Mumbai are known for their hard – working attitude and fun – loving nature. They know the pros and cons of living in the financial capital of the country. Apart from being industrious, they are creatively conscious as well. The culture of Mumbai includes something without which the people of India cannot do: cinema! Like all other Indian cities, Mumbai is also a land of celebrations with festivals like Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi, Naag Panchami, Nariyal Purnima, Feast Day of Virgin Mary, Id, Diwali, Gregorian New Year’s Eve.

Educational Institutions: Educational institutions at the higher secondary level consist of the schools run by the Municipal Corporations and the privately owned schools. Other than that there are the colleges which provide specialized education in the field of media, arts, music, engineering, science and law. Scottish Church College in Mumbai is one of the most popular colleges. Some of the important universities in Mumbai are University of Mumbai, Indian Institute of Technology and SNDT Women’s University.
