Geography: Munich is situated in the upper Bavaria at an altitude of 520 m. The northern Alpine foreland, on which the city is located, is made of a fertile region and a marshy region. The latitudinal location of Munich is 48°08' N 11°34' E. The geographical location of the city makes the rainfall frequent, especially during the winter months. The winter temperatures can fall to 1 degree centigrade. In summer the mercury can rise up to 19 degree centigrade.
History: The year 1158 is taken to be the foundation date of the city, mentioned in the historical records for the first time. Munich got its name from Munichen meaning ‘monk settlement’. Twenty years later in the year 1175, Munich was officially declared as a city and after the re – unification of Bavaria in 1506, it was made the capital city. Munich entered into the world of science and technology some of the great names in the field – Albert Einstein, Carl von Linde, Rudolf Diesel, and Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. The World War I, the consequent Nazi dictatorship and the World War II played inmportant role in shaping the political history of the whole country of Germany.
