Geography: New Orleans is the largest city of Louisiana, located on the banks of the river Mississippi. The latitudinal location of the city is 29°57'53?N, 90°4'14?W. Most of the city is below sea level – one to ten feet below. There are lots of ridges and valleys found along the river route.

History: The original inhabitants of the region were the Nomadic Paleo – Indians. The first settlers of the region were mostly from France, Canada and Germany. The city was named after Philippe II, Duke of Orleans. The France occupied the city for a long time and left their remnants in the form of French quarters which remain one of the major tourist attractions of the city.

Economy: Tourism is the most important contributor to the economy of the city. New Orleans has one of the busiest ports of the world. Oil rigging is also an important industry. Many of the energy producing companies have their headquarters located in the city. Banking and Information Technology also have a presence in the industrial circuit.

Society and Cultural Life: New Orleans is known for its multi – cultural lineage. 65% of the populations are Caucasians, 12% are African Americans, 14% are Latino and 4.2% are Asian descendents. For the tourist, it is hard to find any similarity between this city and any other American city. This is because it has been holding on to its culture and heritage with a blunt refusal to follow the steps of its neighboring cities. After all, where else would you find the magical spells of Voodoo being practiced so religiously, than in New Orleans. The Mardi Gras and the Jazz Festival form a very important part of the social celebrations.

Administration and Government: The administration of the city is headed by the Mayor and his Council. At present the Mayor of the city is C. Ray. Nagin, Jr. Even though the governance is very centralized, the administration has been de – centralized to suit the needs of the citizens.

The officers who are in charge of the departments have their own district offices, in stead of having one central office. The city and the parish of Orleans are considered to be under a single City and parish governance.

Transport System:
  • Travel to New Orleans – To travel to the city take a flight to the Louis Armstrong International Airport and from there, a taxi r a shuttle bus will take you to the city. You can also reach New Orleans by taking a bus or a train, which will take you to the Central Business District of the city. The most important highway of the city is the interstate 10.
  • Travel in New Orleans – To Travel in the city you can hire a private car or a taxi. The best way to get around will be by walking. But if you feel too tired walking, then the buses are always there at your service!

Educational Institutions: New Orleans has a number public and private schools, although the latter are more popular with the guardians. There are many colleges and universities like the University of New Orleans, Southern University at New Orleans, Culinary Institute at New Orleans, Commonwealth University, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, University of Phoenix, Our Lady of Holy Cross College and many more.
