Geography: New York City, the largest city in the United States of America, is located at the point where Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Manhattan, Staten Island and the Long island are the three islands which make up most of New York City. The latitudinal location of the city is 40°43'N 74°00'W. Todt Hill is the highest point in the city at an altitude of 409.8 feet. The city experiences humid and continental climate. Summer temperatures can rise up to 30 degree centigrade and winter temperatures can fall below freezing point. Annual average rainfall is 3.5 inches.

History: The Lenape Native Americans were the original inhabitants of the region when it was discovered by Giovanni da Vettazzano. However, it was the arrival of Henry Hudson in 1609, which gave the city the recognition as a potential settlement. The British made New Amsterdam their colony in 1670s. It was to them that the city owes its name and its importance as the trading post. In the years that followed, the New York City became the capital of the United States of America and rose in status as and vital political center.

Economy: The economy of the New York City decides the economy of the rest of the world. This is not an exaggeration, a fact which all the important players in the business world swear by. With gross metropolitan product of $901.3 billion in the year 2004, the city has the largest economy in the country. New York City is one of the three ‘Command Centers’ for the international business, along with London and Tokyo. There are more fortune 500 companies in this city alone than in any other city of the world. Important industries of the city mainly include the advertising, designing, architecture, communications, information technology, internet games designing and manufacturing.

Society and Cultural Life: The New York City is culturally, the most enticing city of the United States of America. It was not for nothing, that it has been called, the loftiest of all the cities.

In the New York City, the diversity of the American culture is found at its best form. The Broadway Musical, born in this great city, is the creator of some of the finest stage plays. The ethnic composition of the population reflects the cultural diversity. It consists of Caucasians, African – Americans, Latino and Asians.

Transport System:
  • Travel to New York City– At a distance of twenty – five km from the Midtown Manhattan, is the JFK international airport, where flights from some of the major cities of the world take off and land in. the other airport of the city are the La Guardia Airport, Newark Airport. All the trains from Amtrak come to the Pennsylvania Station. The city is also served by the Grand Terminal station. Other than that you can take a bus from Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, LA, Toronto and Montreal.

He is assisted by the council members, who are the part of the unicameral council and are elected for a period of four years. The City is made up of five counties – the New York County, the Queens County, the Kings County, the Bronx County and the Richmond County.

Educational Institutions: The New York City Department of Education is in charge of the public school system. The city is blessed with a very well – organized and well – structured educational system. Some of the institutions which encourage scientific research are the Rockefeller University, Beth Israel Medical Center, and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. The presence of some of the great art museums like the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art has encouraged students to take up the subject of arts and paintings. In addition to that, well stocked libraries like the New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Public Library, has taken up the level of education to a higher level.
