Festivals of Trinidad and Tobago

The Festivals of Trinidad and Tobago are celebrated with much pomp and show. The inhabitants wait for much vigor and enthusiasm for the festival times. The population of Trinidad and Tobago consists of a mix of Hindus, Muslims, Christians and other religion people. Here are some of the important celebrated Festivals of Trinidad and Tobago.

The African ancestors of many Trinidad and Tobago inhabitants are remembered during Emancipation Day on August 1. This day marks the end of slavery in 1839. The day includes the Great Race, which is a power boat race from Trinidad to Tobago. It also includes many more African-oriented cultural events.

These islands are also home to more than 300 descendants of the Carib Amerindians, some of the earliest Caribbean settlers. The tradition of this group is celebrated at the Santa Rosa Festival in the month of August in a community near Arima. Some of the highlights of this event include a procession headed by the Carib Queen, lunch with conventional Amerindian food, and exhibits of Amerindian arts and crafts.

Other special events are solely Trinidadian and Tobagonian in their nature. The Christians in the islands celebrate Christmas and Easter Monday with much enthusiasm.

Trinidad and Tobago also has a good number of Indian populations and for that reason, Hindu festivals, customs, traditions and observances forms an integral part of the society. The most important Hindu festival is the Diwali and its celebration has a unique flavor here in the Caribbean island nation. About 43 per cent of the 1.3 million populations are ethnic Indians. The festival day is regarded as a national holiday.

There are also many Muslims in the Islands and so Eid -ul Fitr also is celebrated with much enthusiasm. It is also celebrated as a National festival in the Island. The month of Ramadan is also celebrated with great enthusiasm and spirituality.
