History of Trinidad and Tobago

The history of Trinidad and Tobago can be traced back to the time when Columbus landed at Trinidad on the 31st of July 1498. It would be slightly debatable if we say that Trinidad was discovered by Columbus as it was inhabited originally before his arrival by the Arawak and the Carib Indians. In fact Trinidad was named by Columbus after Holy Trinity as he this voyage was entrusted to the Holy Trinity. Tobago too was sighted by Columbus in his third voyage which he named as Bella Forma. This island was originally inhabited by Indians who grew tobacco which was later taken over by other settlers. In fact, the history of Trinidad and Tobago dates from the period following the landing of Christopher Columbus.

Trinidad remained under the control of Spain till the end of the 18th century. It was taken over by the British in 1797 and was converted into a British colony in the beginning of the 19th century. Since then it was the British influence that controlled the administration and economy of Trinidad.

Tobago, unlike Trinidad, was controlled by the French, the Dutch, Spaniards and the English at different period of times. Tobago changed European hands for 22 times before being finally over by Great Britain in 1814. Trinidad and Tobago got incorporated into a single colony in 1888.

The post Second World War period brought an end to colonialism which forced United Kingdom in 1958 to establish an independent Federation of West Indies that comprised most of the British West Indies. The proposal was not agreed upon which led to the withdrawal of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago which led to its ultimate collapse. However in 1962, Trinidad and Tobago gained complete independence in 1962 and became a member of the British Commonwealth. In 1976 this was declared a republic with an elected president to head an independent government.
