The twin island Republic of 1.3 million inhabitants, Trinidad and Tobago is a unique Caribbean paradise. With the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1498, Trinidad and Tobago came into limelight although it was founded much earlier and settled by the Indigenous Amerindian tribes - the Arawaks and the Caribs. From the 15th to the end of the 18th century Trinidad remained under the control of Spain. It was in 1797 that Trinidad was occupied by the British and made a British colony. Tobago on the other hand passed off the hands of different European powers like Spain, Holland, France and Britain. It was in 1814 that Tobago was converted into a British colony. However, it was in 1962 Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from England. The Twin islands were converted into a Republic in 1976.

Geography of Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago are the extreme southerly isles of the Caribbean archipelago. The twin island measure approximately 2000 square miles and the topography of the two islands present a stark contrast. Trinidad possesses vast areas of hardwood rain forest cover and a mountainous northern range. El Cerro del Aripo is the highest point at a height of 940 meters above sea level. The central part is a fertile Plain area while the southern part is also hilly. Tobago comprises of volcanic rock with tall peaks in the eastern region. It has a huge reserve of protected reserve covered by dense hardwood forest cover. The beauty of the region is the combination of the green forest cover and the turquoise water of the Caribbean Sea.

Demographics of Trinidad and Tobago

The islands of Trinidad and Tobago has total of 1.3 million people of diverse ethnic groups. The most dominating is the Trinbagonians of African or Indian origin. They form 40% of the populace. The other races belong to European Chinese or Middle Eastern ancestry. This mixed population has led to the emergence of diverse religious faiths. Christianity is the largest faith while Hinduism, Islam and other African faiths are some other sectarian groups that live in Trinidad and Tobago.

Before you venture out for your travels in Trinidad and Tobago, it is quite important to know about the weather condition that prevails at different times of the year. The island experiences mainly two seasons - Dry Season from January to May and the Wet Season from June to December. The ideal time to visit is during the dry season. The entire island experiences an average day temperature of 28 degree while the nights are pleasantly cool.
