Sousse

Sousse, one of the older cities in Tunisia, is tucked away in the central-east of the country, on the Gulf of Hammamet, which is a part of the Mediterranean Sea. Sousse is most famous for its medina, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the popular Tourist Destinations in Tunisia, visited by large number of tourists every year. By virtue of being located on the coast, Sousse in Tunisia boasts of a brilliant beauty of beaches and clear turquoise sea.

Most of the popular sites in Sousse are located within the labyrinthine medina at the heart of the city. You can start off your sightseeing with visiting the Great Mosque. Built in around 850 AD, the mosque is simple in the typical Aghlabite style with a string of angular Arabic and curved arches. The prayer room is covered in reed mats instead of the usual carpet. Despite its location in the middle of the city, it features a tranquil setting.

Visit the Mosaic Museum, in the old kasbah on the edge of the medina. The next stop can be the Traditional Tunisian House which houses a museum. It was the home of a long standing Tunisian family that has now become a museum. The property is centered on an open courtyard from which you can access to all the rooms. You will find here bedrooms for the first and second wife and also rooms for the children. Each of the rooms is fully furnished with curtains dating back 200 years and German clocks imported from the 1800's. The house also features a tower which originally was used for watching stars for the onset of Ramadan.

Ribat is another popular site in Sousse. This is a fortified holy site which served as home to a branch of Islamic warriors. If you climb the top of the watchtower, you will get fantastic views over the Medina. You can also visit the seaside resort together with the integrated complex of Port El Kantaoui which is one of the most well known tourist zones of the Mediterranean.
