Antalya

One of the famous Turkey Tourist Destinations, Antalya is a Mediterranean holiday resort that is renowned especially for its natural beauty. Apart from the breathtaking beauty of the region the city also boasts of ancient relics and architectural constructions. Antalya was founded in the 2nd century B.C. by Attalus II, king of Pergamon.

The city was home to the Romans, Byzantines and Seljuks consecutively till it came under the dominion of the Ottomans. In the 13th century Alaeddin Keykubat built the elegant fluted minaret of the Yivli Minareli Mosque which today serves as the landmark of the city of Antalya. Besides this the city also has many other edifices and artifacts like:

  • Karatay Medrese – It is the theological college that is the best example of stone carvings by the Seljuks
  • Murat Pasa Mosque – Built in the 16th century this is a wonderful mosque
  • Tekeli Mehmet Pasa Mosque – This mosque built in the 18th century is an exquisite piece of architecture
  • Iskele Mosque – This is a work of cut stone and was constructed in the 19th century.
  • Hidirlik Kulesi (tower) – It was originally a lighthouse that was erected in the second century.
  • Kesik Minaret Mosque – This is a structure that has undergone several renovations once at the hands of the Romans, then at the hands of the Byzantines and finally under the supervision of the Ottomans.
  • Clock tower in Kalekapisi Square – It manifests many of the intricate architectural attributes of the Turks.
The region around Antalya offers spectacular and magnificent beauty. The Upper Düden Waterfalls that lies 14 km northeast of Antalya is a really gorgeous cascade. The tourists can also visit the Lara Beach, next to which is the Lower Duden Waterfalls. The waterfall is unique, since it plunges directly into the sea. The whole region has many more such wonderful waterfalls one of which is the Kursunlu Waterfalls. There is a Nilüfer Lake 18 kms from the city of Antalya.

Apart from the Lara Becah there is another pebbled Konyaalti Beach that offers a fascinating mountain view. The tourists who come here can also visit the Bey Dagi (Olympos) National Park and Topcam Beach that are close by. Camps and picnic spots in and around the Tünektepe Hill have opened new options for day excursions.
