The Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi was built in 1981 with the intention of promoting the nation's culture. The other responsibilities of the foundation are to encourage and enrich fine arts and culture and highlighting the rich Arab and Islamic cultural heritages along with the country's own specialties. Located right beside Qasr al-Hosn, The Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi boasts of its magnificent building of Islamic architecture with arching white colonnades, shaded courtyards and relaxing gardens.
The area of the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation spreads over over 32,000 square meters right at the heart of Abu Dhabi city. The main building stands out with its tall semi-circular arches ornate with colorful tiles. The buildings of the Cultural foundation was designed by the world's renowned Architects Collaborative Inc. The Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi houses a library with a collection of about 2 million volumes and four thousand old manuscripts, theater, cinema, auditorium with a capacity of 1000 people, lecture rooms, meeting rooms, an exhibition center and a coffee shop. The Foundation organizes various cultural events, including concerts by international and local artists; classical film festivals, art displays and workshops throughout the year.
Presently, the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation plays the key role in making culture understandable, accessible and acceptable to the wider community of Abu Dhabi. This endeavor is promoted through monthly programs of cultural activities including seminars, lectures, workshops, literary and artistic events, open forums, photography exhibitions, and other artistic exhibitions.
