Wildlife in Abu Dhabi




The lagoon complex to the north east of Abu Dhabi conserves a rich variety of wildlife in Abu Dhabi. The region is of high importance to maintain the ecological balance of the city with extensive mudflat, coral growth, mangrove forests and sea grass beds.

Balghelam is another significant areas of wildlife in Abu Dhabi. It shelters a herd of san gazelle descending from the southern desert. The figure today has gone up to 300. The Arabian or Mountain Gazelle also thrive in this region.

The mudflats are quite significant as they nestle migrating shorebird during winter months. Though the actual figure of the birds could not be ascertained due to its difficult accessibility, yet it is highly influential in benefiting the entire ecosystem of Abu Dhabi.

Arabian Orynx is one significant species and its conservation is a mater of great concern for the Abu Dhabi's Environment Agency. After about 40 years the Arabian Orynx has been brought to its natural habitat and saved from extinction. Its preservation is the organization's firm commitment to conserve the precious biodiversity. The EAD has selected some sites to preserve the endangered wildlife in Abu Dhabi. Al Ain Zoo has been chosen as a strategic partner for the cause.

Collection of sea snake forms part of protecting the marine wild life in Abu Dhabi. The reptiles were collected from different regions and four species were collected from Abu Dhabi itself. The snake measures between 50 - 77 cm long and are very fatal to human beings and its bite very poisonous. There are 50 species of sea snakes found in the gulf waters.

The adverse climatic condition has contributed to the needs of preserving the wildlife in Abu Dhabi. The government is paying special attention to preservation and conservation of wildlife in Abu Dhabi.
