Dubai Museum

Dubai Museum is situated in the renovated Al Fahidi Fort. It is a repository of all items that pertain to the Arab past and ethnicity. In the year 1799 the Al Fahidi Fort was built as a defense structure to prevent foreign invasion. Al Fahidi Fort was converted into the Dubai Museum in the year 1993.

The exhibition that tourists get to see once they step into the Dubai Museum transports them to the days of yore. All the items on display depict desert life, lifestyle or provide a sneak peek into the kind of life the Arabs led centuries ago. Models of traditional Arab homes, pearl diving and trade routes are put on display. The most striking component of this museum is the artifacts of the Emirates from the 3rd millennium B.C. that were excavated from the graves of Al Qusais.

The Dubai Museum defended the Dubai Creek for many years before it actually became a museum. Corals and shells were used to construct the walls of the fort. Lime has been used as a cementing material. Wooden poles support the upper floor and are called handles. The ceiling is made up of palm fronds, mud and plaster. The fort had also served as the residence of the Royal family, a garrison as well as a prison in its earlier years.

At the very entrance of the Dubai Museum there are a collection of old maps of the Gulf and the Emirates. The museum also showcases the photographs like the aerial view of Dubai to explain Dubai's expansion between 1960 and 1980. The door itself is worth watching. It is a colossal, iron studded structure. To provide a view of Old Dubai, models of the Dubai houses with large courtyards with traditional wind towers are also present in the museum.

This museum in Dubai also contains many of the traditional weapons and daggers. Dioramas with life-size figures, sound and lighting effects depict the lifestyle of the people of Dubai before they struck gold in the form of oil. The museum is a must include in the list of tourist attractions in Dubai.
