Umm al-Quwain’s name comes from Umm Al Quwatain which means ‘Mother of two powers’ which refers to the powerful sea faring tradition of the state. 200 years ago the Al Ali tribe shifted their capital to Umm al-Quwain from Al Sinniyah Island when the supply of sweet water dried up.

Umm al-Quwain joined the United Arab Emirates on 2nd December 1971. The major occupation of this emirate has been fishing and date cultivation. The main Attractions in Umm al-Quwain are the long clean beaches and a beautiful enclosed lagoon. Just 50 kilometers south from Umm al-Quwain city is Falaj Al Mulla which is the agricultural hub of the state. Attractions in Umm al-Quwain include the Seneyah Island which is a natural reserve containing different species of birds, deer and Al Qaram trees. It is one kilometer from the city. Other places to see are Dream land, dhow building yard, the Aquarium, Umm Al Quwain Museum, Al-Dur and camel racing.
