Vent Haven Museum

Vent Haven Museum, Kentucky is one of the most popular and most visited tourist attractions in Kentucky. To understand how this museum was built, let's peep into the brief history about the founder and the making of this museum. Vent haven Museum, Kentucky was founded by a native of Cincinnati, William Shakespeare Berger, called as "W.S." by his friend. At the age of 16, in the year 1894, William Shakespeare Berger began working in the mailroom of the Cambridge Tile Company in Cincinnati and in 1947 and he retired as President of the company.

While W.S was on a business trip to New York in 1910, he purchased Tommy Baloney, his first ventriloquist figure and this marked the beginning of his fabulous collection which was later on formed the basis of a museum. His collections slowly grew in numbers. Although originally he kept them all at this home, the collection quickly outgrew its quarters and W.S. refurbished his garage and even built a second building to house his collections.

From the late 1940's until 1960, W.S. was the President of the International Brotherhood of Ventriloquists. Mr. Berger also maintained extensive personal correspondence with ventriloquists around the world. W.S. had no heirs as he had outlived his wife, son and grandson. Fearing that his collection would be divided and dispersed, he sought advice from his attorney who helped him set up a charitable foundation for his property, assets and collection.

Vent Haven Museum, Kentucky is the only museum of its kind in the world. It houses over 700 figures, thousands of photographs and playbills. There is also a library inside the famous Vent Haven Museum, Kentucky with a huge collection of books, some of which date back to the 1700's. In 1973, a third building was opened to house the collections. Edgar Bergen and Jimmy Nelson were among the main performers.

Vent Haven Museum in Kentucky today stands as an institution devoted to the art of ventriloquism in which a person manipulates his or her voice so that it appears that the voice is coming from elsewhere. Every year between 900 and 1200 people visit the Vent Haven museum. The Museum also hosts an annual international Convention for over 400 ventriloquists every year. The museum is open to the public and stands as a gift of William Shakespeare Berger to the nation.
