The city of Washington DC is known for its numerous attractions and one of them is the Franciscan Monastery, Washington DC. This beautiful and peaceful place of worship is visited by pilgrims as well as tourists. It is located near the Brookland Metro stop on the Red Line. From this stop the monastery is 15 minutes by walking or you can also take a bus. The monastery is located on Quincy Street.
The Franciscan Monastery, Washington DC grounds are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are regular tours of the shrines and the monastery on the hour at 10 and 11 in the morning and 1,2 and 3 in the afternoon. But tours are given in the afternoon at 1,2 and 3 on Sundays and all the tours are free.
The monastery also known as Mount St.Sepulchre is a Franciscan monastery and is also the Commissariat of the Holy Land in America. This beautiful monastery was designated a National Historic Site in 1991. The Franciscans of the Order of St.Francis were entrusted with the guardianship of the Holy Land and other Christian shrines over 700 years ago by the Roman Catholic Church. Slowly this work spread to supporting schools and missions in the Holy Land and care for refugees and needy people in the region. The Franciscan Monastery in Washington DC is dedicated to this trust and tries to inform Americans and others of the need for this custody and care.
The Franciscan Monastery at Washington DC was designed by the Roman architect Aristide Leonori and was built between 1898-1899. The church's floor plan is in the design of the five-fold Crusader Cross of Jerusalem. It is built in the Byzantine style after the famous Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Just surrounding the church is the Rosary Portico which has 15 chapels commemorating the lives of Jesus and Mary. Each of the chapels has artistic ceramic plaques which bear the Angelic Greeting in 200 ancient and modern languages.
The portico's façade is decorated with early Christian symbols from the Catacombs. The monastery is attached to the rear of the church and built in the monastic style of the late Romanesque. Another beautiful thing to see is the Franciscan Monastery, Washington DC's grounds. The landscaped gardens feature replicas of shrines in the Holy Land. There is also a library and archive containing over 40,000 books and periodicals of different periods. The St.Francis Hall can also be used for wedding receptions, meetings and charitable events.
