Parque El Calvario, Caracas




Parque El Calvario, Caracas is originally known as the Independence Promenade, built on the orders of President Guzman Blanco. Parque El Calvario, Caracas is the oldest park in Caracas and is situated at such a vintage point from where the red roofs from the colonial period can still be seen.

This is one of the most well known and frequently visited tourist attractions in Caracas and the travelers never forget to keep Parque El Calvario while sightseeing in Caracas. This is a chockablock of numerous beautiful gardens.

It is a great place for hikers who will get an opportunity to have a pleasant in the trail surrounding the park. One can also visit the Cajgal Observatory and the Ornithological Museum and The Military Historical Museum, in the proximity. There is also a sculpture of Diego de Lozada in the park. Beautiful view of the gardens can be seen from the Miraflores Palace and the Tower of Silence or El Silencio.

Some of the outstanding monuments of Caracas are also located here. They are the arch of the Federation and the Escalinatas of Calvary commemorates the War of Federation. The Lourdes Chapel and the statue of Christopher Colombus are also worth seeing.

This place is known as the “Calvary”, it is located on a hill. During the 17th century it was a pilgrimage site and the way to the top of the forest used to be lit with candles. Therefore the Bishop of Caracas designated it as “El Calvario”. To the west of El Silencio is the stairway which leads to the gardens.

The President Antonio Gunzman Blanco had a contract with some French landscapers. They designed the park with garden in different levels. There is also a chapel built in Gothic style of architecture.

Another chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes was built by President Joaquin Crespo, who completed the construction of Parque El Calvario, Caracas in the year 1885.
