Constructed in the year 1766, following the orders of Manuel Centurion, the present building of House of the Congress of Angostura, Ciudad Bolivar housed a school. It was also the official residence of the governors of the province. That is why House of the Congress of Angostura, Ciudad Bolivar is also known as the House of the Governors. The house has stood witness to many happenings which has eventually shaped the history of the country.
House of the Congress of Angostura, Ciudad Bolivar owes its name to the historical event of setting up of Congress of Angostura in this house on February 15th in the year 1817. The 37th edition of newspaper Correo del Orinoco were printed here in this building. The house has also served as an education center and public library from the year 1829. In the year 1840, Guyana school was established in the building.
It was in the year 1883, House of the Congress of Angostura, Ciudad Bolivar was categorized as the institute of the first category. At present, the house serves as a museum and the site of the Historical Files of Guyana.
