Lake Maracaibo, Maracaibo: Location

Lake Maracaibo in Maracaibo is one of the planet's oldest lakes. A 55 kilometers long strait connects the northern edge of the lake with Gulf of Venezuela. Lake Maracaibo, Maracaibo is a magnificent salty lake. It is fed by many rivers of which the Catatumbo Lake is the largest. The lake serves as a shipping route to the cities of Maracaibo as well as Cabimas. The basin around the lake is a rich source of crude oil. One will find the General Rafael Bridge spanning over the Maracaibo Lake.

It was discovered in 2004 that about a major portion of the surface of the Lake Maracaibo, Maracaibo is covered by duckweed, specially Lemna. Great efforts have been taken to uproot the weed from the lake waters. Every 48 hours the weed becomes double its size and occupies about 130 million cubic meters of the lake. The weed does not respond to biological or chemical treatments. The Venezuela Government is still trying to remove the weed from the lake.

Lake Maracaibo, Maracaibo is fed by salt water from Caribbean Sea as well as fresh water from many rivers. The light fresh water floats above the salt water. As a result the salt layer forms a dense layer at the bottom and thus traps nutrients . In 2004 Maracaibo faced rains which caused the nutrients to move to the surface of the water. Theses nutrients helped the weed to expand.
