Lake Maracaibo

Lake Maracaibo is the oldest lake on the planet Earth. The northern edge of the lake is connected to the Gulf of Venezuela by a strait which extends to a length of 55 kilometers. It is a magnificent salty lake fed by the salty waters of the Caribbean Sea as well as many rivers of which the Catatumbo Lake is the largest. The lake serves as a shipping route to the cities of Maracaibo as well as Cabimas. The basin around the lake houses large reserves of crude oil. It was found in 2004 that about a bulk portion of the surface of the lake is covered by duckweed. The government took measures to uproot the weed from the lake waters. Every 48 hours the weed expands and become double its size and occupies about 130 million cubic meters of the lake. The weed does not respond to biological or chemical treatments. The Venezuela Government is still trying to remove the weed from the lake.
