Lake Maracaibo

Lake Maracaibo is one of the oldest lakes on earth. The lake is connected to the Gulf of Venezuela by a 55 kilometer long strait. It is a huge brackish lake fed by the salty waters of the Caribbean Sea as well as many rivers of which the Catatumbo Lake is the largest. Many ships use this lake as the pathway to cities of Maracaibo as well as Cabimas. The basin around the lake houses large reserves of crude oil. It was discovered in 2004 that about a major portion of the lake is covered by duckweed.

Palafitos in Santa Rosa de Chiquinquira

Palafitos in Santa Rosa de Chiquinquira, located towards the north of the city of Maracaibo, consist of wooden houses standing on the Lake Maracaibo and other rivers and lakes in Maracaibo, supported on stilts. They were built by native people of Venezuela. Venezuela is called Little Venice due to these palafitos built over the rivers. Venezuela was named as Little Venice by Amerigo Vespucci when he came to Venezuela from Venice and explored the mesmerizing Lake Maracaibo.
