The Maracaibo eco-region lies within the chief oil producing region of Venezuela, and serves as a natural habitat to a wide variety of wildlife species. The Maracaibo dry forests are found in the northeastern coastal area of Venezuela. The greater part of the eco-region is situated in the state of Zulia in the Maracaibo Basin. The remaining portion is located in the state of Trujillo.

Among them, the opossum (Marmosa xerophila) and the vesper mouse (Calomys hummelincki) live in dry habitats.

Wildlife in Maracaibo constitutes of a wide variety of avian species in the eco-region. The pygmy swift (Tachornis furcata), buffy hummingbird (Leucippus fallax), , black-backed antshrike (Sakesphorus melanonotus), slender-billd tyrannulet (Inezia tenuirostris), tocuyo sparrow (Arremonops tocuyensis), chesnut piculet (Picumnus cinnamomeus), white-whiskered spinetail (Synallaxis candei) and vermilion cardinal (Cardinalis phoeniceus) are the most popular amongst the avian acrobats.

The ecoregion is bounded by the Sierra de Perijá to the west and the Cordillera de Mérida and the Sierra of Baragua to the south and northeast. A variety of mangrove species flanks the shores of Maracaibo Lake. A wide network of roads passes through the basin, one of them being the Pan American Highway. The region constitutes the Bolivar oil field, the largest field in Venezuela, situated on the northeastern shores of Lake Maracaibo.

The ecoregion covers the coluvio-alluvial plains. The annual temperature ranges from 16 to 260C. The annual rainfall in this area is around 1000mm. This piece of land is flat and the surrounding mountainous region becomes damp forests at higher altitudes. The area is punctuated by gurgling rivers that run into the Maracaibo Basin from the surrounding hillside.
