The city was discovered when Juan Rodriguez Suarez lead the Pamplonian mining expeditions and named the city as 'Merida' after the name of his birth-place. The actual settlement that we see in Merida today was not there at first but was about 30 kilometers towards the south. In the year 1785 Merida got the status of an episcopal which led to the creation of the seminary that eventually became the University of Andes in the year 1811.

Merida is a very important centre of activity in the state of Merida. The seat of municipal and state governments, the Mayor's offices, the Governor House, the regional offices of the electoral branches and the offices related to the judiciary can be found in Merida. The Libertador Municipality's 13 prefectures out of the 15 prefectures ca be found placed within the city.
