History
The history of Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, dates back to the time when the Spaniards arrived here. It was in 1780 when the Christian Mission of Pozuelos was founded. At that time, the majority of the inhabitants were Indians. On the 9th of April, 1862, Pozuelos Bay began to be populated by group of 26 families coming from Margarita Island. Since then the region adopted a number of religious identities. They included Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) and Virgen del Amparo (Virgin of Amparo). Every year on 8th November and 3rd May, the Day of the Virgin of Amparo and the Day of the Holy Cross are celebrated respectively.
The first church of this region was constructed in 1868 and Puerto de la Santa Cruz (Port of the Holy Cross) was the name that the town was given. However this town was simply called "Puerto La Cruz".

Puerto la Cruz is surrounded by the cities of Lecherías (belonging to the Diego Bautista Urbaneja municipality) and Guanta (belonging to the Guanta municipality). It is located on Pozuelos Bay. Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela is situated on the Caribbean Sea, in close proximity to Mochima National Park.
