History has it that the Ancient Citadel, Hue served as the capital of Vietnam from the year 1804 to 1945. The citadel has a perimeter extending to a length of 10 kilometers. The citadel is surrounded by a moat. It houses the Imperial Enclosure, Noon Gate, Forbidden Purple City, Thai Hoa Palace. The construction of the citadel began in the year 1805 by Gia Long, the first king belonging to the Nguyen dynasty. The Ancient Citadel, Hue covers an area of 5.2 kilometers. Though the tourists do not have to pay a fee to enter the citadel region, an admission fee is charged to enter the Imperial Enclosure. On approaching towards the Imperial citadel you will get to see huge flag tower called Cat Co. At the entrance of the Ancient Citadel, Hue you will find a lotus pond. There is a bridge over the pond which will lead to the Thai Hoa Palace.
