Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue


Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue is a very beautiful pagoda in Hue in the country of Vietnam. This site was constructed by Lord Nguyen Hoang. He belonged to the Nguyen dynasty. This site was established in the year 1601. This Buddhist monastery was refurbished in the year 1844 under King ThieuTri's rule. While on a tour to Hue, the Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue strongly demands visit from the vacationers from around the world.

There is a legend attached to this pagoda in Hue. The residents near the area of the present site used to see a vision of an old woman. They used to see her sitting on the small hill. The old lady who wore a red long dress as well as green trousers used to claim that this site had supernatural powers. She also used to claim that one day a big leader would construct a pagoda at this place to impart peace to this nation. After telling this, the lady used to vanish in the cloud. As this story spread around, the Lord Nguyen Hoang also came to know about it and so arranged the establishment of this pagoda. The pagoda was called Chua Thien Mu which meant the Heavenly Lady Pagoda.

The words "Thein Mu" when interpreted means a fairy woman. This site overlooks the southwestern shore of the Perfume River. The 21m high tower is the most important feature of the pagoda. This pagoda also has a two thousand kilo bell which was set in the year 1710. The Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue also has a tortoise bearing stele which was set in 1715. These are the major attractions of this pagoda.

This pagoda in Hue has 2 divisions. The front of this temple has the Phuoc Duyen tower. This tower can be seen from different points in Hue. It can also be reached from the Perfume River.

The second part of this temple is its back portion, which has the main hall where the statue of Lord Buddha is kept. Out here the monks live as well as practice Buddhism. This temple was the eye of Buddhism in central part of this country. In the year 1963, in an act of hostility against the Diem regime, a man named Thich Quang Duc set himself ablaze in downtown Saigon. You can view the car in which he went to Saigon in this pagoda. This car is placed in the back of the Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue. Being one of the famous tourist attractions in Hue, transportation in Hue makes it easy for the tourists to reach this spot.
