Baltic Wedding Traditions

Baltic Wedding Traditions are followed in countries like Germany, Finland, Lithunasia, Russia, Sweden, Estonia and Latvia. These are called Baltic countries as they have easy access to the Baltic Sea. Weddings differ from one country to another. Following is a detailed description of some interesting Baltic wedding traditions.

Finland is famous for its peculiar wedding traditions. Here a bride with a golden crown must go from door to door with a pillowcase to collect her wedding presents. She is accompanied by an old man with an umbrella. This umbrella is the symbol for protection and shelter. Again during the wedding reception the bride is blindfolded and spun around while the flower girls dance round her. In course of this play the bride places the gold crown on one of the girls. This girl then becomes the next bride. Again in some parts of Finland the bride's mother-in-law or godmother places a china plate on top of the bride as she dances. As the plate falls, the broken pieces predict the number of children the couple is going to have.

In Russia a unique and a beautiful carpet is ordered for the bride and the groom. Here they are made to stand as they recite their marriage vows. What is noteworthy about this ritual is that whoever reaches the carpet first will be the guardian of the house. Generally the wedding toast is given to the bride and the groom by a close friend of theirs'. Moreover in a Russian Wedding the guests after having their glass of champagne throw them down. It is considered to be good if the glasses are broken into pieces after hitting the ground.

Sweden also observes certain wedding customs. As the bride is ready to leave for the church to take her marriage vows the mother places a gold coin on her right shoe and the father a silver coin on her left shoe. Again it is mandatory for the new Swedish bride to wear three bands on her wedding finger, first one symbolizing her engagement ring, the second wedding ring and the third for motherhood. Generally we see that most countries follow a ritual to select the next bride but Estonia will surprise you with its unique custom of selecting the groom-to-be. The groom is blindfolded and spun around while the single men revolve around him. In the due course he places his hat on a certain person and he is considered to be the next lucky man.
