British Wedding Traditions

The British people are known all over the world as strict followers of tradition. British Wedding Traditions make the British wedding ceremony a memorable event to watch. These traditional rituals have been in vogues since ancient times. British Wedding Traditions underwent some changes during English Reformation when the church laws underwent a lot of reforms. Since 1549, it has been the custom to organize marriages in churches.

At the wedding ceremony, the father of the bride gives his daughter to the groom. The priest in the church coordinates the proceedings. The priest takes the consensus of the assembly whether they have any objection to the marriage. The assembled people are free to raise their voice on any objection. The priest also allows the bride and the groom to reconsider their decisions. In front of all the wedding couple swear of loving, honoring, protecting and be faithful to each other till the last day of their lives. These age old British Wedding Traditions are observed minutely till date.

The groom puts the wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand of the bride. The ring is received by the bride and the priest makes a formal announcement of the marriage. The bride and the groom are declared as husband and wife. The groom kisses the bride at last. However, nowadays the couples can marry in marriage registry offices too. In that case the couple is declared husband and wife by the registrar. Two witnesses are required to be present.

The newly weds share a meal after the reception ceremony as a mark of confirmation of their new status of husband and wife. The wedding cake stands as the symbol of the union of the newly weds. The guests too share the wedding cake. It is well known practice that the bride and the groom cut the cake for the first time together. The right hand of the groom is placed over the right hand of his bride. Then her left hand is placed on top and the bride slowly cuts the cake assisted by the groom. The first slice of the cake is fed to the bride by the groom and vice versa. There are lot of superstitions too associated with British Wedding Traditions.
