Chinese are very traditional people and the Chinese Wedding Traditions reflect their faith and loyalty to the traditions. Chinese Wedding Traditions are solemnly observed even today.
Chinese Wedding preparations start with the fixing up of a date of marriage by the families of the bride and the groom. The members of the grooms family make some formal gifts to the bride which is called as the Grand Gift. The prospective bride and the groom are officially considered to be engaged. According to Chinese Wedding Traditions, the members of both the families make the official announcement to the friends and relatives about the marriage by sending the customary “Double Happiness Cakes” along with the invitation.
Red is considered as the auspicious color for all Chinese rituals. As such, the bridal gown is of red color as well as the Grand Gift is packed in red baskets. For the wedding too, the bride and the groom's home in decorated in red on the wedding day. The envelopes carrying invitations, and the gift boxes are all of red color.
“Hair dressing ritual” and “Capping ritual” are performed respectively for the bride and the groom by their respective family members. The groom arrives at the bride's place before the marriage to take her to the chapel. After the ceremony,The bride visits the groom's place where she joins her in laws for a tea ceremony. The ceremony on the wedding day ends with a grand feast where delicacies from Chinese cuisine is served.
The rituals on the wedding night are interesting and are worth watching. On the wedding night the bridal room is lit up with dragon and phoenix candle with the belief that it drives away all evils. The wedding couple drink tea from two cups which are tied together with red strings and their arms cross each other. The Chinese people consider this act as the formal wedding vow. The bride is offered dumplings that are half raw.
The wedding ceremony is followed by the reception ceremony. A welcome speech addressing the guests and the ritual of cutting the wedding cake jointly forms the main part of the reception. There are many layers in a Chinese cake. Each layer is meant to signify a ladder of success for the newly weds. The couple cuts the cake from the bottom.
On the following morning, the bride is supposed to cook meals for the groom's family. After three days of marriage, the newly wed couple goes to the bride's family.
