Though some of the French Wedding Traditions do not exist any more, there are many that are still prevalent today. Most of the French Wedding Traditions have changed with the passage of time. Some of them are so popular that they have influenced wedding ceremony of other countries.
The groom generally wears white wedding dress. White is the color of the love, purity and innocence. This tradition of wearing white dress on the wedding day began long back in France. The bride on this special day wears bridal trousseau. In a traditional wedding day the custom of using fragrant flowers for decorations is an important part of the wedding. The bride generally carries bridal bouquets. Flowers are symbolic and they generally carry a special meaning for both the bride and the groom. They are believed to ward off evil spirits. Flowers are also used to spread beautiful incense.
Wedding bells are an important part of the French Wedding Traditions. In many villages the groom calls on her future bride at her home. She generally calls her on the on the morning of their wedding day. In traditional French wedding, the bride escorts her to the wedding chapel. As both walk towards the chapel, the village children pull the white ribbons of the wedding gown. The bride then cuts these ribbons.
In the church the bride and groom sit on two red velvet chairs. The couple then exchange vows and promises to remain with each other for the rest of their lives. As the newly wed couples departs from the wedding site laurel leaves are scattered in their path. Both the bride and the groom walk on these scattered leaves. In traditional French wedding a toast is made to the couple. The couple drinks the toast in a double handled goblet. After that a reception party is held on the day of the wedding. It is attended by the friends of the groom. The friends of the bride and the groom often bang pots and pans outside their window. This is often accompanied by lively tunes.
