Hindu Wedding Traditions

Hindu Wedding Traditions are very attractive. People from many parts of the world plan to marry following the Hindu Wedding Traditions. The varied wedding traditions in Hinduism reflect the native culture. Generally marriages in Hinduism are considered to be a holy bon between the two.

Hindu Wedding Traditions lay special emphasis on happiness, accord and growth. As par the Hindu customs the wedding should be held on the day of the "bright half" of the northern course of the sun.

Some of the most popular wedding customs in traditional Hindu marriages are Vara Satkaaarah, Madhuparka Ceremony,Vivah-Homa, Pratigna-Karan and others. Vara Satkaaarah is the reception of the groom and his family members at the entrance of the wedding venue. Generally the priest enchants some holy hymns. After this the bride’s mother blesses the groom and applies vermilion on the forehead of the groom. Madhuparka is when the groom comes to the altar and the father of the bride showers loads of gifts on the bride.

In Shila Arohan, the mother of the bride asks her to step onto a stone slab. This is when she gives her daughter some advice to start a new life. This happens on the morning of the wedding day.

Vivah-Homa is the sacred fire ceremony. Fire symbolizes purity and spirituality. At the time of the Pratigna-Karan the bride and the groom walks round the fire. Both of them exchange vows and promise loyalty, love towards each other. The couple circles round the holy fire for seven times. According to Hindu customs ‘parikrama’ or ‘mangal fera’ symbolizes completion of marriage according to Hindu Marriage Act. However before the bride and the broom get ready for fera, the holy marriage knot is tied. Generally the one end of the groom’s scarf is tied to the other end of the bride’s dress. The priest enchants the hymns. Generally the hymns are in Sanskrit.

Pani Grahan is an important part of the Hindu Weddings. The groom holds the right hand of the bride in his left hand. He then accepts her as his wife. After this the couple seeks the blessings of the elders.
