Scottish wedding traditions are very ancient. This wedding tradition which is as old as the 13th century is still followed strictly by the Scots in modern days. This reflects the orthodox nature and the traditionalism of the Scots. Following is a detailed description of the Scottish wedding traditions.

As per the wedding attire is concerned the bride flaunts a white wedding gown while the groom gets decked up in traditional Highland kilt, kilt jacket and sporran. There are many rituals that the Scottish people follow in their marriage ceremony. Some of them are:

• Firstly the couples are supposed to announce in public their wedding date for the three consecutive Sundays. This initially they were supposed to do on marriage banns in church which is obsolete now-a-days. What they need to do now is to just declare their wedding date in public and then secure a marriage license.
• Another peculiar wedding custom of the Russians includes “creeling” the bridegroom. In this ritual the groom must carry a large basket filled with stones on his back. This he has to carry as long as his bride does not come up to him to give him a kiss.
• As the wedding vows are completed the groom pins a strip of his clan's tartan color to the bride's dress. This is done to establish that the bride has now become a member of his clan.
• When everything is over the couples exchange rings and kisses each other in front of the invitees. This is followed by a reception party.

  The reception party is mainly full of enjoyment and merriment. The reception hall is beautifully decorated and the guests are offered delicious dishes. To add charm to these are romantic music and lively dance. Generally the first dance of the night is led by the wedding couples and then the invitees participate in this dance session. Another peculiar custom of the Scots is that as the bride arrives in the groom’s house he is required to lift his bride off and carry her across the threshold. This is done so that she is well protected from the evil spirits. After all this the priest ultimately wishes the newly-weds a happy married life.
