The city of AL Mocha in Yemen was well described by the Jesuits and the legendary travelers Jeronimo Lobo. Lobo was on journey on the Red Sea in the year 1625. According to his documents, AL Mocha was not that widely popular earlier. After the Turkish assumption of Arabia, the city became an important commercial hub of the region. The Pasha’s residence was a two days journey from the city.
There was another major factor for the popularity of the city. The Ottoman law of that time stated that all the ships have to be anchored at the Mocha port for paying taxes before entering the Red sea. Thus traders across the globe who wanted enter the Red sea had to pay a visit to the city. That’s how they came to know about the delectable variety of coffee available there.
The travelers will get to see a wide variety of attractions while staying here. The entire city has historical remnants spread across it. The so called house of Prophet Mohammed is a distinctive feature of the city. The houses looks somewhat like a tenement block which was rented to the travelers irrespective of their caste, creed and religion during the ancient times.
