Livingstone is a historic colonial city and present capital of the Southern Province of Zambia, a tourism centre for Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls) lying 10 km south on the Zambezi River, and a border town with road and rail connections to Zimbabwe on the other side of the Falls. Its population was estimated in 2002 at 97,000[1].
Known as the tourism capital of Zambia, the town is probably better oriented towards visitors than anywhere else in the country. Named after missionary and explorer David Livingstone, and located only about 10km from the thundering Victoria Falls, the town remained relatively unknown until recently. Political problems in Zimbabwe, however, have led to an influx of tourism on the Zambian side of the falls, and there is a pervading feeling of change and optimism in the air.
The Livingstone Museum is worth a visit. It is the oldest museum in Zambia, and contains many interesting displays including a collection of David Livingstone memorabilia.
These are among the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The Zambezi river, which is more than 2 km wide at this point, plunges noisily down a series of basalt gorges and raises an iridescent mist that can be seen more than 20 km away.
