Though its incorporation to the country of Tanzania is relatively young, the history of the island boasts of impacts received from an extensive list of countries like Samaria, Assyria, Egypt, Phoenicia, India, China, Persia, Portugal, Oman, Arab, Holland and Britain. The name of the island is supposed to have been received from the Persian word “Zangi-bar” which translates as ‘coast of the blacks’. The other supposed origin of the name of the island could have been from the Arabic word “Zayn Z'al Barr” meaning ‘fair is this land’. The island is however, nicknamed as the “Spice Islands”.
