If you want to see the Wildlife in Mutare while you come here on a tour then visit the popular Cecil Kop Nature Reserve. It encompasses 4200 acres of scenic beauty, where one can see Zimbabwe's wildlife under natural conditions. This popular natural reserve of Mutare is situated only 2 miles from the City Center and it remains open every day of the year. The tourists may also drive around Thompson's Vlei section of the game park that is situated on the eastern borders of the city. Cecil Kop Nature Reserve is made up of 1500 hectare wildlife reserve and it consists of three distinct areas. These areas include the Tiger’s Kloof, the forested north eastern mountain face with plentiful springs rolling down to the dam and surrounding msasa woodland and Thomson's Vlei with its swelling grasslands and the Wilderness Area of deeply wooded forest, gullies and springs.
The sanctuary is home to three white rhino, three elephant, the most famous of which is Daisy, three giraffe, zebra, a wide range of antelope, ostrich, vervet and samango monkeys, baboons, and with an occasional sighting of leopard. The Cecil Kop Nature Reserve is an ideal and perfect environment for visitors. It is a perfect site for family outings with a refreshment kiosk, picnic sites and barbecue facilities. This sanctuary is managed and developed by the WEZ Manicaland Branch.
Another popular natural reserve is the Vumba Botanical Gardens and Reserve. It is located 32 kilometers from Mutare. It is established on a portion of the farm that was formerly known as “Manchester”. Known as Manchester Park then, the Gardens became a tourist attraction and were visited by many thousands during and after World War II. At this date several thousand people visit the Gardens annually from every corner of the globe.
You can also visit the famous Murahwa's Hill, which forms the backdrop to the Mutare Showgrounds. It is a nature reserve that is a naturalist's paradise. Here you can see the rare birds, butterflies and trees in their natural environment.
