National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens, Harare



Located 4 kilometers north of Harare city center, National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens, Harare is one of the biggest Tourist Attractions in Harare. National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens Harare Zimbabwe was established with an aim to protect and preserve the flora and fauna and help in the research on indigenous plants. The research is carried out to promote conservation, growth and sustainable use of plant life in the region. The main objective of creation of National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens in Harare is 'To Increase Knowledge and Appreciation of Zimbabwean Plants.'

The park is actually divided in two sections - National Herbarium which stores preserved plant specimens and National Botanic Garden where the living specimens are grown. The Herbarium has a valuable collection of about 500,000 plant specimens. It is also the main center for research on identifying and naming plants of the Flora Zambesiaca Region which consists of Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana and the Caprivi.

The Botanic Garden nurtures more than 900 trees and shrubs that are found in Zimbabwe. The collection is grouped according to the region of their origin. It has sections containing trees of the Lowveld, Highveld and Eastern Highlands. Currently there are a number of trees from other continents growing in the Boatanical Gardens. These plants are from the regions that have climatic conditions similar to Zimbabwe such as Asia and Australia.

Another section of National Herbarium and Botanic Gardens, Harare is the Education Center. The chief job of the Education Center is to circulate information on Zimbabwean flora. It generally publishes information for educational institutions and schools. With a rich collection of plant life the park is an ideal day trip from Harare. The park houses a parking place for the visitors.
