Gweru is a city situated near the centre of Zimbabwe. It has a population of about 137,000 which makes it the fourth largest city in the nation. Gweru is the capital of Midlands province. Gweru was established in 1894 by Dr. Leander Starr Jameson. In 1914, it became a city and achieved metropolis status in 1971.

The industries include Zimbabwe Alloys, a chrome smelting plant, and Bata Shoe Company. In Gweru both are the leading employers. Gweru is located in one of Zimbabwe's finest cattle rearing areas of Zimbabwe and nearby agricultural activity rotates around the cattle industry.
Bata have their tanning plant for cattle hides and the Cold Storage Commission CSC have an abattoir in Gweru. Flowers are also grown in the region for the international selling market. Zimbabwe's largest distiller, Afdis, has a wide range of vineyards in Gweru for the manufacture of wine. Mining is also common, primarily chromite ore from rich deposits along the Great Dyke to the East of Gweru.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe have the largest marshalling yard of the country, Dabuka which is on the South side of Gweru. Dabuka plays an essential role in rail movement in the country as it is the central hub of the rail that links to Mozambique in the East, South Africa in the South and Botswana and Namibia in the South West, which lies on the Bulawayo. It has straight links to all the other cities of Zimbabwe and other towns. It is the central city of cities.

The main and secondary system of education has not changed much in structure for numerous decades. The schools in Gweru give to the same British system of education as the rest of the nation.
